Solutions for Today's Challenges in Education

Lack of Organizational Alignment

Challenge: Many school districts struggle with misaligned visions, goals, and learning outcomes across grade levels, which hinders cohesive student development and disrupts continuity in learning.

Solution: Battelle for Kids’ Future Ready Journey Map focuses on organization-wide alignment through services like strategic visioning, learning frameworks, and vertical and horizontal articulation, ensuring every part of the system works towards common goals for student readiness.

Outdated Approaches to Learning

Challenge: Traditional education models are often static, focusing on content delivery rather than preparing students with durable skills like critical thinking, collaboration, and resilience, which are essential for success in a fast-changing world.

Solution: Battelle for Kids’ Portrait of a Graduate helps districts define a shared, community-driven vision for future-ready students. The Portrait to Practice work translates that vision into actionable strategies, ensuring these skills are embedded in everyday teaching and learning.

Fragmented Professional Development

Challenge: Many educators face disconnected and insufficient professional development opportunities that don’t align with district goals or student needs, making it difficult to implement deeper learning practices.

Solution: Battelle for Kids provides professional learning experiences through the Leadership Lab, EdLeader21 Network, and tailored workshops that empower educators with tools and strategies to implement deeper learning and innovation.

Challenges with Student Well-being and Engagement

Challenge: Increasing mental health challenges and disengagement from learning are affecting students’ ability to thrive in school.

Solution: The Well-Being Lab at Battelle for Kids focuses on the development of resources and practices to support the comprehensive well-being of students and staff. This helps create conditions where students can build resilience, hope, and ultimately engage more deeply in their learning and develop a future-ready mindset.

Inadequate Community Engagement

Challenge: Many districts struggle with involving the community in shaping the vision and goals for student success, leading to a disconnect between school outcomes and community expectations.

Solution: Battelle for Kids emphasizes community engagement through their Portrait of a Graduate work, allowing districts to collaborate with local stakeholders in defining what it means for students to be future-ready.

Difficulties in Scaling Innovation

Challenge: Learning organizations often lack the capacity or resources to scale innovative practices system-wide, leading to isolated pockets of success that don’t translate into broader, long-lasting change.

Solution: Through the Future-Ready Journey Map, Battelle for Kids provides strategic planning, capacity building, and innovation networks and professional learning communities like EdLeader21, SOAR Ohio, and the Complex Systems Cohort (CSC), helping organizations pilot new approaches and scale best practices across entire systems.

Inconsistent Measures of Success

Challenge: Standardized testing often does not reflect the full scope of student learning or readiness, focusing solely on academic achievement rather than a comprehensive view of a student’s skills and capabilities.

Solution: Battelle for Kids emphasizes a purposeful system of assessments that show evidence not only academic attainment but also durable skills, offering a well-rounded understanding of student growth and learning organization effectiveness.
